Howl Support

What is the current version of Howl?

1.0.3

I haven't received any Push Notifications.

Configure your push notifications through the iPhone Settings application. Your push notifications will begin immediately.

I'm seeing Dubl.

Upgrade to version 1.0.2 or later. A bug in version 1.0.1 causes some messages to appear twice in message lists. This is the result of a programming error on our part in dealing with 64-bit Twitter IDs (a.k.a. "Twitpocalypse 2"). No finger pointing...our bad.

Why don't my tweets say "from Howl" when I view them on the Twitter web site?

The short answer... they should now say "from Howl" if posted from version 1.0.1 or later.

The long answer... Twitter has created an unlevel playing field for application developers. Applications which were created and registered with Twitter before June 2009 can set this "from" value quite easily. Applications which were created after that date must jump through extra "security" hoops to do so by using a user credential scheme named OAuth, even though these hoops do nothing more than provide the illusion of extra security. In fairness, they will allow Twitter some degree of latitude in shutting down malicious applications in the future, but as long as the Twitter API remains as it is now, these hoops provide nothing more than "security theater".

This isn't the first time that Twitter has frustrated developers with OAuth.

And more recently, this "from" support caused a major security hole for Twitter web site users.

Most third party clients, including Howl, were not affected by the security hole.

Is there a way to view my Twitter profile?

Yes.

Click on your name at the top of any of the main screens (Tweets, Mentions, Messages, Favorites, Search).

Is Howl secure?

Yes.

Howl always communicates with Twitter over a secure (https) connection whenever user credentials are exchanged.

It's ridiculous to us that other Twitter clients on the iPhone even offer a setting for using an insecure connection. Why would anyone want to do that?

In addition to insisting on using a secure connection for communications, Howl stores all of your login credentials in your iPhone's secure Keychain, and nowhere else. We can't speak for other Twitter clients on the iPhone.

Howl is behaving mysteriously on my jailbroken iPhone.

That's your problem, not ours.
